故事发生在近未来，靠打工为生的弗琳·费舍（科洛·莫瑞兹 Chloë Grace Moretz 饰）和特种部队退役的哥哥都是全息游戏的狂热爱好者。所不同的是，弗琳游戏水平更高一筹，经常代替老哥登录他的账号去打通难啃的关卡。这一天，某游戏公司寄来最新款全息游戏头部设备，声称只要按照指示完成任务就能获得丰厚报酬。由于母亲患病在床，家中生活捉襟见肘，于是弗琳答应进入游戏进行测试。出乎她意料的是，这款游戏的体验感非常强，无论视觉听觉还是触觉，都有如身临其境一般。可是游戏带来的恐怖诡异感受，也让弗琳拒绝继续进入游戏。 就在此时，暗网发起了对弗琳的追杀令，虚拟世界和现实世界的界线瞬间变得模糊起来……。A reclusive scientist builds a robot that looks exactly like him to go on a long-term space mission. Since the scientist seems to lack all emotions, he is unable to program them into his automaton, and an eccentric woman is hired to "educate" the robot on human behavior.
