美国医生马海德来到中国上海，经宋庆龄介绍，于1936年夏到陕北苏区进行医疗考察。在毛泽东等中共领导和红军将领以及苏区群众的感召下，他毅然放弃美国优越的生活，留在延安参加中国的抗日战争。他曾经有三个梦想，第一个梦想是娶了中国妻子苏菲；第二个梦想是中国的抗日战争取得伟大的胜利；第三个梦想是成为一个真正的中国人。在经历了十四年的艰苦奋斗，马海德由一个自由主义者变成一位坚定的马克思主义者，他1937年加入中国共产党，参加过红军、八路军和解放军，长期战斗在我军的卫生战线，和白求恩、柯棣华等国际主义战士一同，为中国革命做出了伟大的贡献。他不但实现了三个梦想，新中国成立后，他新的梦想是为中国性病和麻疯病的彻底根除而努力奋斗。。Miss Mary Morstan contacts Sherlock Holmes for his help regarding her father, captain Morstan, who disappeared 10 years ago.
