亚当（休•丹西 Hugh Dancy 饰）是一个声控娃娃的玩具设计师，同时也是一个天文爱好者。由于存在社交恐惧症，他一直独居。某天，公寓里搬来了一个性格开朗的女孩——贝丝（（萝丝•拜恩 Rose Byrne 饰）），她和他在洗衣间相识，并开始了交往。贝丝发现亚当并不谙人情世故。虽然他不懂得约会，却带领她来中央公园看浣熊。慢慢地，两个人产生了感情。贝丝希望亚当进入自己的朋友圈，但是天生对于社交圈的恐惧，让他闹出了不少笑话。与此同时，老板认为亚当的工作效率无法适应竞争的环境，将他解雇。于是，贝丝开始帮助亚当克服心理恐惧，应对面试。两人的感情也随之加温。正在此时，贝丝的父亲突然卷入了一场诉讼案，并面临牢狱之灾，这时亚当却因为贝丝善意的欺骗而大发雷霆。口角时，两人失去了理智，这场恋爱岌岌可危……。The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely.
